Dear Friends,

Here we are at the middle of January, the weather’s not great, but there is so much to look forward to in 2020. I find myself daydreaming a bit at my drawing table. Thankfully Pi the cat keeps me a little more focused. I have finished the print to be released at my first show, February 8th and 9th in Blacksburg, Virginia. It is titled, Winter’s Reverie, Mabry Mill. I love this particular Blue Ridge Parkway landmark and the history behind it.

The mill began operations in 1908. Designed and built by landowners Ed and Lizzie Mabry and their neighbors, this mill gained popularity in the area for its consistently good corn meal. What is interesting about the corn meal, is that the reason it was good was due to a lack of fast water flow to drive the mill. Mabry was known in the area as a slow grinder, and the resulting friction of the stones never increased to a point of scorching the product. In addition to the mill, Ed built a saw mill and blacksmith shop. When he passed away and Lizzie moved away, the National Park Service acquired the property in 1938. This mill and the beauty of the location was recognized as historically significant to the area, and accurately represented the Blue Ridge Heritage, so a renovation of the property was undertaken and completed in 1942. I have visited it a number of times and have always been charmed by its splendor. Located in Floyd County, VA, Mabry Mill can be found at mile marker 176 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Winter’s Reverie, Mabry Mill $85 IS: 8-7/16 x 11-3/4 ins. Edition 500 and 25 aps You may preorder your print by calling the Blacksburg Gallery at 540-552-6446.
