Dear Friends,

The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, not the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when you discover that someone else believes in you and is willing to trust you with a friendship.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

If friends can be counted as blessings, then I have been given an extraordinarily large share. This past weekend served as proof as my daughter Becky accompanied me to Des Moines for my annual appearance on Iowa Public Television. My new print, Historic Buildings of Des Moines was released during the opening weekend of their fundraising drive.

Making new friends with a group of Iowans, and sharing some lively conversation,  made our layover at the Atlanta airport pleasant. Seated with me is Moss collector and now friend, Linda Bos.

We met travelling healthcare providers, Kerry and Troy, who took time to discuss concerns about the Coronavirus outbreak. They assured us that the best thing that we could do is to wash hands frequently and avoid touching our faces and eyes. For my fellow Moss Society travelers, I do want to add that we anticipate no delay or cancellation of the May 2020 Society trip to the British Isles.

Reunion with friends. Saturday night dinner with the members of the Central Iowa Chapter of the Moss Society was held at Chapter president Sharon Cubit’s home. There were so many delicious foods to choose from.

Sharon’s husband, Dave, even served up a little “ham.”

Live on the set with my friends at Iowa Public Television. We have worked together since 2012 raising money to continue the valuable educational programming that is shown on IPTV. The call center was ably staffed by Rotarians.

My friend Sam. She has come to the station every year when I have visited. I am so happy to see her again.

While I was in Des Moines, I learned of the passing of Tom Bochner. I’d like to take a moment to remember him. I met Tom in Atlanta. He and his wife Sharon had opened a gallery in West Des Moines and they became one of the very first Moss dealers. Like many of my early dealers, Tom retired. He moved to Florida and enjoyed a second career as an artist.

This weekend is the beginning of Daylight Savings time. Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour on Saturday night. Already the longer daylight hours have had a positive effect at my drawing table. I took some time this week to explore one of my favorite subjects on canvas. Do you like it?

I love painting birds and capturing the essence of their personalities. I am glad that there are so many different types, so that I’ll never run out of subjects.

I’m very thankful for the freedom that we have as American citizens, and never more so than when I vote!

Until next week,
