Dear Friends,

Happy Mother’s Day!

In celebration of this special day I would like to share a poem written by Jean Nordhaus. For me the emotion evoked by this short poem aptly describes the beauty of life and aging as observed through childhood memories. 2021 marks the 20th year that my mother has been gone. Many of you knew Gran Liz and shared in her bright delight of life. What adventures we had! I really miss her. The love of family and nature figures predominantly in my art which is what makes this poem, A Dandelion for My Mother, so very special to me.

“How I loved those spiky suns,

rooted stubborn as childhood

in the grass, tough as the farmer’s

big-headed children – the mats

of yellow hair, the bowl-cut fringe.

How sturdy they were and how

Slowly they turned themselves

Into galaxies, domes of ghost stars

Barely visible by day, pale

Cerebrums clinging to life

On tough green stems. Like you.

Like you, in the end. If you were here,

I’d pluck this trembling globe to show

how beautiful a thing can be

a breath can tear away.

I captured Momma in her element with this pencil sketch from 2018. Do you remember
what song was her favorite?  Momma, IS: 9-1/2 x 7 ins., Edition: 250 and 25 artist's proofs. $65.

By the time you are reading this I will be on the way to West Virginia for my show with 3rd Avenue Art Gallery & Custom Framing by Jenks. The open house will be on May 8th and I will be signing from 10 am until 5 pm. I will be bringing with me the 2021 Moss Foundation Raffle Quilt made by Nancy Gore. You won’t want to miss seeing this beauty. The tickets are $3 each, or 2 for $5. The proceeds from the raffle will be going to the PBM Endowed Scholarship and Teacher Grant programs.

This is the hand-painted centerpiece that Nancy chose to work with. The Moss Foundation office has over 60 images available for quilters to choose from. Over the years, our quilt program has been so successful in supporting the mission of my foundation. My love and thanks to all of you who have participated. If you are interested in making a quilt, please contact the foundation at
foundation@mossfoundation.org, or call 800-430-1320.

Following the show, my daughter Mary will be whisking me off on a Mother’s Day adventure that includes a visit to my granddaughter Sarah in Asheville. It wouldn’t be kind to close this letter without telling Momma’s favorite song. It was Danny Boy.

Until next week,

Love,
