Dear Friends,

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and I am preparing for my 2 day show with the P Buckley Moss Gallery of Blacksburg. I was looking through my newsletters from previous years and marveled at how often I had been travelling abroad on this date. I think with all of us having to isolate for the last year and a half, the opportunity to get out and just visit together locally is so special. So, I am inviting everyone to just stop by the Blacksburg Gallery and say hello. I will be signing from 11 am until 4 pm on Saturday, May 29th and from noon until 3 pm on Sunday. When you visit the gallery, you will notice a lot of framed new work of mine. Corrado at the P Buckley Moss Gallery of Waynesboro has been hard at work framing for this show. His choice of materials is delightful and I am excited to see all that he has done.

For release at this show, is my new print,
Painted Spirit. This print is available in 2 sizes, and in a number of framing options.  Painted Spirit: Small, IS: 13-1/8 x 9 ins., $100; Med., IS: 22-1/8 x 15-1/8 ins., $280; Edition 500 and 25 ap’s. Shown here is the small giclee, $360 framed.

As it happens sometimes, I finish a work and then have another vision for it. This is a remarque I created of Painted Spirit which includes the Currituck Light. For information on these unique prints, contact the Blacksburg Gallery at 540-552-6446.

I just love the bright, yet elegant framing Corrado created for my print Garden Jewel. The framed size is 12 x 13-1/2 ins., $210. The unframed print is also available for $55.

How I like surprises when it comes to the presentation of my work. My staff at the Portfolio printed Summer on the New River on canvas, and wow, does it ever pop! Did you know that some of my giclées can be printed on canvas rather than paper? If you are interested in this printing option, which is available for most of my newer work (2011 and up), please contact Angie or Patty at the Portfolio at 800-430-1320. Shown here the framed canvas is 34 x 22 ins., $1,200.

The Moss Foundation Raffle Quilt will be on display during my show in Blacksburg. I encourage you to take a moment when you’re at the gallery to look closely at the detail that Nancy Gore put into this quilt. This year we are raising money for my Foundation’s Teacher Grant and Endowed Scholarship programs. I hope you will consider purchasing a ticket. Tickets are $3 each, or 2 for $5 and the drawing will be held on December 5, 2021 in Waynesboro. You do not have to be present to win.

Memorial Day has been hailed as the opening day of summer. Let us remember why Memorial Day was created. It is a day of remembrance for those military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. On Memorial Day you may see people wearing a red poppy on their shirt or jacket. I found it fascinating when I looked into the origins of wearing a poppy. Lieutenant Colonel John McRae, a Canadian brigade surgeon of World War I penned the poem “In Flanders Fields” as a war memorial. In this poem he describes the ravaged landscape of the battlefield where soldiers had perished and where the red poppy had then grown. For Memorial Day, I would like to share John McRae’s poem, “In Flanders Field.”

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard among the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

Until next week,

Love,
