Dear Friends,

Ut Prosim, which means “that I may serve” is a wonderful precept to live by. Five years ago I learned about this philosophic motto that drives the community that supports Virginia Tech. While I have enjoyed performances and activities at this university, I have come to realize the depth of support provided that make these opportunities available for students. My daughter Mary and I attended a Kickoff Dinner that was sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Hokie Club. Regionally, there are more than 50 Hokie Clubs that are recognized, and each supports VT athletics in their own way. The Moss Gallery of Blacksburg donated my print Hokie Land, which was auctioned and raised $2,000.00 for the athletic scholarship program. Speakers for the evening included Head Football Coach Justin Fuente, players Dax Hollifield and James Mitchell. The student speakers stories were so compelling and made me realize that they are not only getting book learning at school, but valuable life lessons too.

The sweltering heat that has held much of the eastern United States in its sticky grip has taken a hiatus. During the heat I was working at my drawing table and have paintings and stories to tell. The first painting is the now completed New River Community College (NRCC). It was done in celebration of the college’s 50th year anniversary. The painting depicts the campus in Dublin, VA. The release date is tentatively scheduled for late August. More information to follow.

My second new painting is the New Dublin Presbyterian Church that I promised a glimpse of a few weeks ago in this newsletter. The print is slated for release very soon, with the anticipated date to be early September. Proceeds from the sale of this print will be donated to support the Presbyterian Children’s Home of the Highlands. Founded in 1919 as a refining school for girls, the program at the Children’s Home has evolved over the last century to help girls, boys and young men find hope and purpose for the future.

Mathews County, VA gave me the honor of creating the poster to celebrate the 45th Annual Mathews Market Days (MMD). On Saturday, August 17th, I will be in Mathews for the official release of the poster. You will find me at The Bay School, located at 279 Main St. You may purchase your poster at this time and I will be signing them from 11 am until noon. The MMD poster is a wonderful way to enjoy and remember this occasion, but did you know it also serves a second purpose? There is a grant program specifically to benefit local children that the MMD organization finances with proceeds from the poster and vendor sales during the weekend. The festival dates this year are September 6th and 7th.  Please visit www.mathewsmarketdays.org for information and directions.

The 2019 Mathews Market Days Poster will be $35 at the signing event on August 17th and $40 at the festival. The edition size is 350.

Until next week,

Love,
