Dear Friends,

What a welcome sight to have the Mathews High School Marching Band kick off an abbreviated Mathews Market Days Celebration!

The weather forecast for Mathews Market Days put the festival schedule in jeopardy and held the community in suspense as Hurricane Dorian passed by. Thankfully she did not linger and Saturday morning we were greeted with bright sunshine.

Market Days Committee member, Dee Russell, presented me with a plaque in gratitude for my years of support for the community of Mathews. It has been my pleasure to share in and with this special community.

The Moss Foundation had a booth at the festival and was making and painting balsa wood airplanes with the children. Lois Badey, Foundation board member, is sharing her delight for flight with her project plane. The booth was busy all day and the children had the best time. The Foundation will have another children’s activity booth at the Fall Barn Show and Gallery Open House in Waynesboro, VA October 11-13. Look for them downtown by the Moss Gallery located at 329 W. Main St.

On Sunday, September 8th, I received a warm welcome from the congregation of New Dublin Presbyterian Church. Not too long ago, a congregation member had asked me about doing a commemorative print to celebrate their 250th anniversary. This particular Sunday was the day of the anniversary celebration and I arrived in time to join in the church service. Afterwards, the Presbyterian Women fixed a splendid barbecue and I met with the members and signed prints. It became clear to me the longer I was there, as to why this church has stayed together for so long. A combination of compassion and forward thinking, as exemplified by new pastor Sara Jane Nixon, made one feel right at home.

I couldn’t decide which pictures to share, so here they all are. From the upper left going clockwise: Jan Woodward and Ann Jeffries; Teresa Leonetti brought her
Seven Sisters (P.E.O.) print in to be signed; me with the framed original of New Dublin Presbyterian Church; Teresa Leonetti (L) with event organizer Laura Bullard; congregation member and I having a deep discussion about the history of the church. Notice the church history timeline in the background? It was so impressive.

Each and every trip we make gives us insight into who we are, especially when we go to the lands of our ancestors. My mother was Sicilian and my father was Irish. I have spent a considerable amount of time exploring Italy and my sights are now set on Ireland. The trip that I have planned is with the Moss Society and we will be going to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, beginning on May 22, 2020. Please know that if you are not a Moss Society member, you can still go. The itinerary is packed with adventure and I am especially looking forward to the time we will be spending in Killarney. To see the full brochure with itinerary and cost, please follow this link. 2020 Moss Society Trip. The Collette Travel website is where you can make your reservation. The reservation code number is 943245. You are also welcome to call them at 800-852-5655.

We’ll be having a cooking class in Killarney. Do you remember this cooking class from an earlier Moss trip? I’ll give you a hint. It was in 2014.

Thursday September 12th I’m off to Des Moines, Iowa for one of the fastest trips I’ve ever made. The national P.E.O. convention is being held there and I released a print earlier this year for them in celebration of their 150th anniversary. It is titled Seven Sisters and honors the seven young women who founded the organization. I will only be there for the day and will return home to Radford, VA on Friday.

Until next week,
