Dear Friends,

Last week was a wonderful week for promoting the inclusion of art in children’s education. On Wednesday I received the Margaret Sue Copenhaver Contribution to Education Award on behalf of the P. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children’s Education, and on Friday evening the Museum in Waynesboro hosted a Children’s Art Exhibit and Reception.

The Margaret Sue Copenhaver Institute for Teaching and Learning offers a quality professional development opportunity for K-12 teachers through Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. Margaret Sue Copenhaver was a public school librarian in Richmond, Virginia, and the Institute celebrates its namesake’s commitment to educating children and instilling in them a love of reading. The Institute’s Contribution to Education Award recognizes outstanding commitment and work in the field of education. The Foundation was recognized for its work in promoting the integration of the arts into all educational programs, with a special focus on programs for children who learn differently. I was thrilled to accept the award and felt deeply honored, but I know that the work of both the Foundation and the Society would be impossible without the support of each and every one of you. So, this is your award, too!

The Children’s Art Exhibit and Reception at the Museum was the culmination of a two-week art program hosted by the Foundation and held at the Museum for The Shenandoah Valley Head Start and Virginia Preschool Initiative children. Each weekly session had eighteen four- and five-year-olds registered for a program to explore a “Deep Sea Adventure.” Through various art endeavors, the children learned about the seas and their creatures, the coral reef, and sea vegetation. The children drew, painted, printed, and even made large papier-mâché creatures. Each child had many works of art to display at the Friday evening event. We were delighted to have approximately 125 parents and friends share in the fun and exciting event for the children.

The children's artwork display was enjoyed by parents and friends during the Friday reception.

The Foundation would like to thank art teachers Amy Howard and Leslie Allen; the staff of the Moss Museum for their help; the P. Buckley Moss Society for its support; and Lance Allen, Administrator of the Society office, for the time he spent with the children in games and songs, teaching numbers and letters and space relations and rhythms.

A few weeks ago the Museum had five very special visitors. The five ladies were all nurses who had attended the Community Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield, Ohio. Earlier this year I published a print edition of their school, titled Community Hospital and Nursing School. I was delighted to learn they had stopped by the Museum when they were in the area. I love the way art forges connections with people and brings them together in friendship.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July!

Love,
Pat
